Message about EBT? A poll, and your ideas

NIH Advisory Committee -- Kelly Brownell's Rudd Center

During the last two days, I had the opportunity to be in meetings with Kelly Brownell of the Rudd Center at Yale. Kelly has devoted himself to obesity treatment research for decades, and the talk he presented was all about how people don't change their behavior, that over time intake of fruits and vegetables and exercise/week have stayed stable. He is interesting in changing the defaults so that people are not tempted. They don't have to decide not to eat something. It's just not available to them or at such an expense that they decide against it. There is no question in my mind that the industry advantage, that they have addictive foods to sell and set it in front of people every chance they get, poses a public health risk, and I'm hopeful that some kind of flat playing field for whole foods will begin to appear. Jim Billings: Insight plus 5 cents gives you a nickel

One of the most cherished individuals who has contributed to the method is Jim Billings, PhD. Jim is a psychologist, theologian and clinical director of Dean Ornish's Preventive Medicine Research Institute, in Sausalito, CA, down the road from the Institute for Health Solutions, within the time frame of a nice long run. About 15 years ago, I consulted for Dean Ornish, in an effort to bring his method to more people. In the process, I met Jim Billings, a big bear of a man, with full white beard, and a formidable presence at the Institute. Read more »

Childhood Obesity . . . Michelle Obama

Home? It's a Play Pen, right?

Joy!So, I'm creating JOY in my life. That's my JOB, because if I matter, I take my power, and I use my brain and body to create joy in my life, then I'm going to be a beacon of light, and not be crabby, numb, on edge or miserable. That sounds like a good thing. So I'm looking around my house and wondering if I am creating this nice little play pen for myself. Not what anyone else would like, but my personalized play pen. I have JUST what I need to make MYSELF enormously happy. Let's see. I have my cat, and she is loving and so soft and sweet. She lets me carry her around the house like a baby, and doesn't even act like she is tolerating me. She is that sweet. Then I have my bookshelves. I LOVE looking at the books, sifting through the books, and remembering reading the books and discovering what they say. I have a hot shower and I LOVE the heat on my shoulders and all the splashes of water. But what else could I do to make my house feel like my own personal playpen? What do you do to create joy from all the natural pleasures . . .speaking of that, I think I will go play my piano . . . and put my running shoes by the front door, so I go for a run tomorrow morning . . . Compulsive Eating - It's JUST a wire! Just dismantle it!

What is compulsive eating? We call it many things. Emotional overeating, comfort eating, binge eating, sugar addiction, choc-oholic, and then the mean statements about the downstream effects, the love handles, the chubby cheeks, the loosened belt buckle. What is it REALLY? It's a wire. That wire is a "survival circuit" and if you break that circuit and, by the way, get your whole brain to be wired at 1 so you aren't always tripping that circuit, then there is peace at last. Weight loss is nearly meaningless, because if that survival circuit that is triggered the overeating isn't clipped, then another excess takes hold, and we are not free. When did you go to a commercial weight program or a diet doctor and hear that your job was to turn off the drive to overeat, to stop wanting it? If they told you that, you might have laughed or may not have believed them. When I had one of those realizations that we have when driving (probably too close to the van in front of me) or languishing in the shower (I was driving), that these circuits were wired at Brain State 5, when we are so stressed that unless you know that and target it, you will have to live with it. When a circuit is encoded in stress - of betrayal, abandonment, physical pain, metabolic upset -- it is stored behind the curtain. We can't access it because when we arouse it we have to be in Brain State 5. In that state our mind turns off! So we become prisoners of our own circuits. In EBT we are rewiring them! Our new programs (short term Boulders and Peas or Life at 1 - for weight loss), you will learn those skills. Right now I hope you will think about those circuits, the ones that we defend and don't know what to do about, because we really can't even see it, because it was wired at Brain State 5. Read more »

A Reality Show, a PBS Program on the Method . . .

Television! We're looking at options for doing a PBS special on the method, and whether or not we do, it won't be on air for a year. Yet in the meanwhile, we wonder about a reality show on the method or ecourses for each kit with videos of action sessions so that you could really experience the method with others via video. Would you like to be part of a group that was on video? The nature of EBT groups is so intimate and special -- each Cycle is new and fresh -- that video worries me. What are your thoughts about how to bring the method to more people, including who cannot find their way into professional groups and telegroups? We know that when people move through the kits with the support of a group or telegroup, they go forward. When they stop the group their emotional brain is relieved. The love and power of the group is what keeps people doing the amazing work that ends up creating a new life. We're considering various options. Let us know! Read more »
