Pain Management

Knowing Your Brain State

Regardless of the cause of your pain, there is often a "secondary stress" that makes it more challenging. That is the stress caused by being stressed about being in pain. Knowing your brain state can give you important information about how to ease stress, but understanding how to more effectively manage the pain medically, and how to decease the psychological stress that naturally accompanies pain. Just the way you may identify your pain on a numerical scale, knowing your brain state and identifying it on a numerical scale is core to managing pain.

The Basics

Most adult experience pain which is either chronic or sporatic with back pain being the most commonly reported pain (CDC 2009). Pain can cause stress and stress can cause or exacerbate pain. Often pain is part of a web of problems in mood, relationships, productivity and health.

The EBT Approach

EBT can be useful in pain management in easing stress from the psychological consequences of pain, and decreasing pain perception. It is not a substitute for comprehensive medical care, identifying the source of the pain and developing a plan for treating the cause.

Many EBT participants use EBT in support of pain management to decrease their reliance on pain medications and to treat the condition that causes the pain.
