Below the Line: Is there a place for that term?
Below the Line: Is there a place for that term?
In EBT, we set aside the term "below the line" a couple of years ago, because although it fit the "allostatic response" in states 4 and 5, it was problematic. If you weren't BTL, then you were ATL, and above the line is balance. We know that eudonic rewards, the higher level neuro-transmitter surges from rewards that further the species are not just in balanced. There is a huge difference physiologically between a mediocre balanced or slightly stressed mood, and feeling taken up and over to a state of consciousness in which you know you are of higher purpose. It's different to roll along in daily life, than to feel a spurt of feel-good neurotransmitters from:
creating peace from within -- sanctuary
feeling whole and being genuine -- authenticity
enjoyed the body feel of being healthy, high vitality, zest -- vibrancy
doing the right thing, being of purpose - integrity
keeping your boundary but really seeing and loving another - intimacy
feeling so connected to the beauty and grace of life -- spirituality
There is a big different between that and feeling "balanced."
Yet there are so many signs that stress in the world is overtaking it, that just recognizing when someone is below the line -- definitely stressed or in a full blown stress response - can be helpful. That's why news shows and talk shows are so fascinating, because they have two BTL views exposed. What about somebody who is at Brain State 1 talking?
